On the 24th of May, 2012, six year seven and eights from Wellsford school went to the Telstra clear event center for national young leaders day, and I was one of them. We had to start of the day by waking up really early around about 6:00! We had to get to school really fast so that we wouldn’t make everyone else late, everybody was so tired but we managed to stay awake the whole time. Once I had got to school just about everyone else that was going to the trip as well was already there. I had to put a wristband on my wrist that told me that I was a student and that I was student number 01432 that means that there was going to be 1500 other students there, and over 100 other schools! It was time to leave school and drive into Auckland, so me and two other students (their names are Emma and Daniel) piled into the back of Daniel’s dad’s car and we were off, the 101km trip was long and boring, it took 1 hour and 20 minutes to get there and we were glad to get there because Daniel’s dad’s car seat had dog hair all over it, and it got all over our clothes! At the events center everything got muddled up, and we had parked in the wrong spot, we didn’t want to get dog hair all over our clothes again, so we stood up in the back of Daniel’s dad’s van, we where lucky that the back windows were tinted, but the front weren’t! Everyone who was walking towards the van that we were in could see us standing up. After a while we eventually found our parking spot and we nervously headed inside the building. The first thing we noticed was the massive amount of people that was inside the building to me there seemed about 3 times as much people than what it seemed on my wristband on it was still nice and cool inside the building, we all stood around and waited for something, but nothing happened, we got tired of standing around so we walked around looking for the door, and we found it. When we were entering the huge room that was on the other side of the door, a lady came to us and gave us a booklet with a big number 12 on the front! In side this booklet we were supposed to write down the name of the speakers and what inspirational things that they said. We were looking around for our seats that were reserved for us, we found them all the way on the other side of the room! There were two huge projector screen mounted on the walls high above us with a camera sweeping across massive amount of kids, and showing their faces on the screen. We sat in the middle of the room on chairs that were all linked together with a hook and holder on each one, we waited for what seemed like a whole day, for everyone to come into the room and take a seat. When everyone had finally taken their seat the first speaker came out to welcome us, it was Sam Johnson, he was the leader of the student army that helped clean up Christchurch he taught us that we can make a difference with what we have in our pockets, the next speaker was Dave Atkinson, he was so funny, and he told us four things: 1. Leaders stick up for right, 2. Leaders choose good friends 3. Leaders live for others 4. That there is a penguin in every banana. The third speaker was Cam Calkcoen, he is a disabled athlete who is very good at 200m and 400m sprints, and he trains at the gym 28 hours a week. He taught us to keep at goals to succeed. The next speaker is Dillon Boucher, he is a Tall Black and Breaker’s player. He taught us to keep training and to never give up. The next speaker was Anna Mac she is a singer, she sings the song “Girl in Stilettos” she wrote her first song “strawberries” when she was five, she taught us that you are never too young to start. Then it was time for lunch and while we were eating our lunch we decided that we had seen enough, made a group decision to go home, so we did. It was a very inspiring day, and a very long one. Film Festival
Thursday saw the very first Wellsford School 5 Hour Film festival. It was a joint effort by some of the Year 7-8 team to write, film and edit their own movie in just 5 hours. Based on the famous V 48 Hour Film Festival that was held in NZ this past weekend (see www.v48hrs.co.nz), our students had to choose the genre of their movie and include one line from a list of choices to include. Each team had to work together to write, film and creat a short movie or trailer. Judged by our very own Celebrity judges, Mr Bradley, Mrs Brierly and Mr Sundvick, teams premiered their movies.
Everyone had a great time and all did exceptionally well, especially as some had no movie making expereince at all. Great work Senior syndicate!
The winner was announceed today in assembly. Congratulations to the team led by Catherine. Their movie is called ‘The Witch of Shady Woods’
Here is the Runner up- led by Harrison- Clown Detectives
Here are some of the other fantastic efforts.
Stop Motion Movies
We have all been busy creating movies in the last few weeks. One of our homework assignments has been to create a short stop motion movie at home using toys or things you have around the house. The movies only had to be short and could be about anything. Most of these were made using the iMotion app, or iMovie. Some of these movies are really incredible and show the amount of time and effort put into creating them. Well done Room 6- a great effort. Here are some of them, check them out and dont forget to comment!
Just hanging out….
Stop motion movies
Some of our enterprising youung film makers have been hard at work in their free time making some stop motion movies. Stop motion is technique that uses lots and lots of photos sped up to create the image of movement. Each item or piece in the shot is moved a small amount each time a photo is taken. Once all the photos are together they are sped up so each photo is only shown for a fraction of a second. Each small movement and the speed of the movie means that it looks like the people are moving around.

Wellsford welcomes the Prime Minister
Last Thursday, 6 students from Room 6 joined a group of other Wellsford students to meet New Zealand’s Prime Minister- John Key. Here is an article written by Jaedyn and Emma about the event.
It’s 8:15 and some lucky students stood in front of The Anglican Church Hall waiting on the arrival of New Zealand’s Prime minister, John Key. Senior students from Rodney College and some people from the Wellsford community also had the opportunity to meet him. Time passed and we wandered inside. We waited excitedly for him to come. The empty seats were not so empty after a while. He opened the door and whispers of excitement filled the air. He and Mike Sabin sat in front of the crowd. Mike talked for a significant amount of time followed by a speech from the Prime minister. Protests and questions came from the crowd of local aged citizens. Then John Key had a chance to tell us some very good advice. It included about always have a good attitude and its not your ability its your attitude. The talk was over and everyone stood up and trotted over to the room where we had morning tea. Ayesha’s mum had made cupcakes to share with him. Ayesha shared them out and we headed over into the food room. They served chicken nuggets, spring rolls, sandwiches, wontons etc. The advice John Key gave us will always be with us to lead us to success in the future. Thanks John Key.

Human Rights Poem
Jaedyn has been busy these holidays and has written a beautiful poem on human rights. She says she “was on the human rights website and this little girl reads out a poem and that gave me the urge to write one. Because Human Rights is a big and very important thing in the world and I believe that everyone should respect one another. This is my way of expressing my spirit towards the way we live and how we live it”
Here is her amazing poem!
The World We Live In…
Why all the fighting?
Why all the hate?
We’re all part of this world,
It should be safe.
It should be a good background
For our next generation.
No one should judge
Our color, language or religion.
As the Black eyed peas once sang “Where is the love”?,
Black, white, yellow and red.
We all have the same rights,
Its better alive than in war and people dead.
We’re all part of this world,
Together we shall stand.
All should be standing tall and proud,
Hand in hand.
